Crowns are used to help strengthen a tooth that has been weakened by decay or an old filling. Crowns are also used to cover discolored or poorly shaped teeth. A crown can be made using gold, porcelain, or a combination of the two to form a natural looking tooth that can hold up to everyday chewing forces. Normally, a crown requires two appointments. Your first visit is when we prepare the tooth to accept the crown, take an impression or mold, and make a custom temporary crown for you to leave with and eat on while the permanent is made. During the second visit, the permanent crown is custom fitted to your tooth and permanently cemented in place.
